Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical knows the importance of a backflow prevention device. Did you know that plumbing codes require all water outlets to be equipped with a backflow prevention device?

So what is backflow prevention, and how often should I have it checked?  A backflow prevention device is used in both residential and commercial spaces, and it protects your water from contaminants and pollution due to backflow.

Why Everyone Has One

Backflow is what it sounds like. It means the reversal of the flow of the liquids, gases, and suspended solids in your water supply. Backflow could occur for one of two reasons: Back pressure or back siphonage. Both are do to a change of pressure in your water system. For example, back pressure refers to higher pressure in the system than in its supply, while back siphonage results from supply pressure being lowered below that of the system.

When Do I Inspect My Device?

Backflow prevention devices need to be inspected every year. In fact, just schedule your backflow prevention device test on the same month it was initially installed. You can find your backflow prevention device outside your home, near the water meter. It’s typically in a green or black plastic box. If searching for this device on a commercial building, check the exterior walls. Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical are State Certified Testers, and we’re ready to help you.

Repair or Replace?

Our expert plumbers won’t know if your backflow prevention system needs to be repaired or replaced until we see it. How old is the assembly? Are the repair parts readily available? Is it less expensive for your customer to replace rather that repair? How difficult will the repair be? Is it simply time to update the assembly? These are some of the variables we must consider when determining if your device just needs a simple fix, or it would be worthwhile to replace the entire system.
